In numerous districts across Sindh, Pakistan, including Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Badin, Thatta, Kamber Shahdadkot, Tando Allyar, and SBA, shelter support has been extended. This assistance, facilitated by the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Housing Cell (SBBHC) of the Government of Sindh, has resulted in the construction of 6,000 shelters. Additionally, with the backing of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 4,000 low-cost houses have been erected.
During the recent floods of 2022, our efforts were directed towards providing shelter support to those affected in various districts of Sindh province. However, it is evident that further initiatives and interventions are required to address the ongoing need for shelter support in the region. Natural disasters frequently disrupt livelihoods and damage shelter facilities, leaving individuals in a state of hardship as they endeavor to rebuild their homes. It is imperative to equip communities with the knowledge and resources necessary to construct climate-resilient rural houses that can safeguard lives and livelihoods in the face of future challenges. In collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP), our organization has assisted numerous women-headed households in enhancing the resilience of their Kacha House shelters. This support includes the provision of raw materials and technical guidance aimed at mitigating hazards and climate impacts such as heat waves, heavy rains, extreme cold, and fire incidents.
Furthermore, training sessions on the use of smoke-free stoves have been conducted for women residing in rural areas of Sindh, promoting both safety and sustainability.
